Set up AutoMod: spam filters, blocked words and an account-age gate
A step-by-step AutoMod setup: guided wizard, per-filter punishments, blocked words, verification and an account-age gate against raid accounts.
AutoMod handles the boring part of moderation: link spam, mention spam and freshly made raid accounts. It is off by default so nobody gets muted by surprise; you decide how strict it is.
Before you start
- Make a private staff channel for AutoMod logs, for example
#automod-log. - Make sure Hana's role is above the members she should act on (why).
Step 1: run the wizard
Run /automod setup. It asks for the log channel and the minimum account age, and turns on the basics. You can change everything later.
Step 2: choose your filters
Open /automod config. This is the AutoMod dashboard: filters, punishments, verification and logs in one place. A sensible starting point for most community servers:
- spam and repeated messages: on
- mass mentions: on
- invite links and malicious links: on
- blocked words: on, with your own list
Step 3: set punishments per filter
/automod punishment sets what each filter (words, invites, links, caps, emoji, files, new accounts, spam) does: log, warn, mute, kick, ban or quarantine, with a duration for mutes.
Tip: Start new filters on log or warn for a week and watch the log channel. Move to mute once you trust a filter isn't catching normal conversation.
Step 4: blocked words
Run /automod blocked-words to add and remove words. Keep the list short and specific; long lists catch innocent words.
Step 5: the account-age gate
Raids almost always use brand-new accounts. /automod age-gate takes:
enabled: on or offdays: the minimum account age, for example 3 or 7action: what happens to younger accounts
If a real person gets caught, exempt them with /automod age-gate-override.
Step 6: verification (optional)
For servers that get targeted often, /automod verification configures a verification step and /automod post-verify posts the panel new members use.
Check your work
/automod show gives an overview of what's on. /automod diagnostics checks the engine is healthy.
